The Disposable Vape Ban in Ireland: What It Means and What to Switch To
By Vapepoint Team - 03/10/2026 - 0 comments
If you vape in Ireland, you have probably heard that disposable vapes are on the way out. A lot of people are confused about what is actually happening, when it happens and what they should use instead. We get asked about it every day, so here is everything in one place.
This guide explains the disposable vape ban in Ireland in plain English: what the law says, why it was introduced, what it means for devices you already own and the easy alternatives that let you keep vaping without the throwaway waste.
What is the disposable vape ban in Ireland?
In July 2026 the Oireachtas passed the Public Health (Single-Use Vapes) Bill. The law prohibits the sale of vaping devices that are designed to be used once and then thrown away. In practice that covers the classic sealed disposable: a device you cannot recharge properly, cannot refill and cannot open, which goes in the bin once the liquid or battery runs out.
The ban does not outlaw vaping. Adults in Ireland will still be able to buy and use rechargeable devices, refillable pod kits, prefilled pod systems and e-liquids. What changes is the type of hardware that can be sold. The aim is to move everyone away from single use products toward devices that last.
When does the ban start?
The ban comes into force when the Minister for Health signs the commencement order. Once it starts, retailers get a six month window to sell through any stock that no longer complies. The government has talked about this happening in early 2027, but commencement dates can move, so it is always worth checking the latest update from the Department of Health or asking us directly.
Our advice is simple: do not wait until the last week. If you rely on disposables, try a reusable option now at your own pace.
Why is Ireland banning disposable vapes?
There are two main reasons the government gave for the ban.
1. Waste and the environment
Every disposable vape contains a lithium battery, a circuit board, a heating element and a plastic or metal shell. Most of them end up in household bins or, worse, on the side of the road. Lithium batteries in bin lorries and waste facilities are a real fire risk, and the materials inside are valuable resources that are simply lost. WEEE Ireland and local councils have been campaigning for years to get people to recycle them properly, and the ban is a more direct way of tackling the problem.
2. Youth vaping
Disposables are cheap, colourful and easy to hide, and the government has been clear that it sees them as a big part of the youth vaping problem. The sale of any vaping product to anyone under 18 is already illegal in Ireland, and responsible retailers like us verify age on every order. The ban is one part of a wider package that also targets flavours, packaging and how vapes are displayed in shops.
What about the disposable vapes I already have?
The law is aimed at the sale of single use devices, not at people who own them. You will not be in any trouble for using a disposable you bought before the ban. What you should do is dispose of it properly once it is finished.
Never put a vape in your general waste or recycling bin. Instead, drop it into a WEEE Ireland Blue Battery Box, which you will find in most supermarkets, newsagents and electrical shops, or bring it to your local civic amenity site. Retailers that sell vapes also have to take back old devices on a like for like basis. It costs you nothing and it keeps lithium batteries out of landfill.
The best alternatives to disposable vapes
The good news is that switching away from disposables is far easier than most people expect. The devices below give you the same simple, draw activated experience you are used to, with less waste and usually a lower cost per puff.
Prefilled pod kits
This is the closest thing to a disposable and the option we recommend to most people. A prefilled pod kit has a rechargeable battery that you keep, and you simply click in a new sealed pod of e-liquid when the flavour runs out. There is no filling, no coils to change and no mess. Popular choices include the IVG Pro 10K, the Lost Mary Nera 15K and the SKE Bar 15K. Each pod holds the legal maximum of 2ml, and the kits are built to keep going for a long time on one battery.
Once you own the battery, you only buy replacement pods, which is where most people notice the savings.
4 in 1 vape kits
If you like variety, the 4 in 1 style kits are a lovely middle ground. You get one rechargeable device with four prefilled pods in the box, often in different flavours, so you can switch between them through the day. Have a look at our 4 in 1 vape range, including the IVG 2400 and Lost Mary 4 in 1 kits.
Refillable pod kits
For the lowest running cost and the most choice of flavours and strengths, a refillable pod kit is hard to beat. You fill a small pod from a 10ml bottle of e-liquid and change the pod every week or two depending on how much you vape. Devices like the Aspire Gotek X and the Suorin kits are simple, compact and built with beginners in mind.
Pair them with a nic salt e-liquid such as ELFLIQ or MARYLIQ and you get a very similar feel to a disposable, because those liquids are made by the same brands.
Disposable vs reusable: a quick comparison
| Feature | Disposable vape | Prefilled pod kit | Refillable pod kit |
| Rechargeable battery | Sometimes, but thrown away | Yes, kept long term | Yes, kept long term |
| Refilling needed | No | No, click in a new pod | Yes, from a 10ml bottle |
| Running cost | Highest | Lower | Lowest |
| Waste | Whole device each time | Small pod only | Pod every week or two |
| Legal after the ban | No | Yes | Yes |
How to make the switch without the hassle
Here is the approach we suggest to customers who come to us straight from disposables.
- Stick with what you know. If you liked a Lost Mary disposable, start with a Lost Mary prefilled pod kit or MARYLIQ e-liquid. The flavour profiles are designed to match.
- Keep the same nicotine strength. Most disposables sold in Ireland are 20mg nic salt. Choose 20mg pods or liquid at first and only lower it once you are comfortable.
- Charge it properly. Use the cable supplied, avoid cheap fast chargers and do not leave the device charging overnight. Our battery safety guide has more tips.
- Buy a couple of spare pods. Nothing is more annoying than running out on a Sunday evening. Having two spares in the drawer takes the stress away.
What else is changing for vapers in Ireland?
The disposable ban is not the only change. A separate 2026 bill aims to limit flavours, packaging and shop displays, and since November 2025 e-liquid carries a tax of 50 cent per millilitre. We cover all of this in our guide to vape laws in Ireland.
Frequently asked questions
Will vaping be illegal in Ireland?
No. Vaping remains legal for adults aged 18 and over. The ban targets single use devices only.
Are rechargeable disposables banned too?
Devices that are sealed and not designed to be reused fall under the ban even if they have a charging port. Pod kits where you replace the pod and keep the battery are not affected.
Is a pod kit more expensive?
The first purchase usually costs a little more because you are buying a battery that lasts. After that, replacement pods or e-liquid work out cheaper over a month than buying a new disposable every few days.
