Nic Salt vs Freebase E-Liquid: How to Choose the Right Nicotine Strength
By Vapepoint Team - 03/10/2026 - 0 comments
Choosing an e-liquid used to be all about flavour. These days the first question is usually a different one: nic salt or freebase? And straight after that comes the second question: 10mg or 20mg?
Get these two choices right and vaping feels smooth, satisfying and easy. Get them wrong and you will either feel like you are not getting enough, or you will be coughing after every puff. This guide explains the difference between nic salt and freebase e-liquid in simple terms, and gives you a practical way to pick the right nicotine strength for your device and your habits.
What is freebase nicotine?
Freebase nicotine is the original form of nicotine used in e-liquids. It is the purest, most basic form of the compound, and it has a relatively high pH. In practical terms that means it gives a noticeable "throat hit", the slight scratch or catch at the back of your throat when you inhale.
At low strengths, such as 3mg or 6mg, freebase feels gentle and works well in larger devices that produce lots of vapour. At higher strengths it becomes harsh, which is why freebase is rarely sold above 18mg.
What is nic salt?
Nicotine salt, almost always shortened to nic salt, is nicotine that has been combined with a mild acid, most commonly benzoic acid. This lowers the pH and makes the vapour much smoother on the throat.
Because it is smoother, nic salt can be used at higher strengths, such as 10mg or 20mg, without being harsh. That is the reason every disposable vape and almost every pod kit liquid in Ireland is a nic salt. Brands like ELFLIQ, MARYLIQ and IVGLIQ are nic salts made to taste the same as their disposables.
Nic salt vs freebase: the key differences
| Nic salt | Freebase | |
| Throat hit | Smooth, even at 20mg | Stronger, gets harsh at high strengths |
| Typical strengths | 10mg and 20mg | 0mg to 18mg |
| Best device | Pod kits and MTL devices | Larger tanks and sub ohm kits |
| Vapour | Discreet | Can be much bigger |
| Feels most like | A cigarette or disposable | A bigger, airier vape |
Which one should you choose?
Choose nic salt if:
- You are moving from cigarettes or disposables.
- You use a pod kit or a low power MTL device.
- You want a discreet vape without big clouds.
- You want to feel satisfied with fewer puffs.
Choose freebase if:
- You use a larger sub ohm tank that makes a lot of vapour.
- You prefer a lower nicotine strength such as 3mg or 6mg.
- You enjoy a noticeable throat hit.
For the vast majority of our customers, who use pod kits, nic salt is the right answer.
How to choose your nicotine strength
In Ireland the legal maximum is 20mg/ml, so most nic salts are sold at 10mg and 20mg. Here is a simple way to decide.
20mg nic salt
This is the same strength used in nearly all disposables sold in Ireland. Choose 20mg if:
- You smoked more than about 15 cigarettes a day.
- You are switching from a 20mg disposable and want the same feeling.
- You find you are vaping constantly on 10mg without feeling satisfied.
10mg nic salt
A popular middle ground. Choose 10mg if:
- You were a lighter smoker, around 10 a day or fewer.
- You have been vaping 20mg for a while and want to step down.
- 20mg feels too strong or gives you a light headed feeling.
Signs your strength is wrong
Too strong: dizziness, a headache, a slightly sick feeling or a harsh throat. Put the device down, drink some water and drop a strength next time.
Too weak: you find yourself puffing almost nonstop, you still crave a cigarette or you never feel quite satisfied. Try the next strength up.
Nicotine strength guide at a glance
| What you use now | Suggested starting point |
| 20 or more cigarettes a day | 20mg nic salt in a pod kit |
| 10 to 20 cigarettes a day | 20mg nic salt, stepping to 10mg later |
| Fewer than 10 cigarettes a day | 10mg nic salt |
| A 20mg disposable every day or two | 20mg nic salt from the same brand |
| Occasional social vaping | 10mg nic salt or a low strength freebase |
Treat this as a starting point rather than a rule. Everyone is different, and how deeply and how often you inhale matters as much as the number on the bottle. Give a new strength two or three days before deciding whether it is right, because the first day on any new device always feels a little different.
Switching from a disposable to bottled nic salt
If you are moving from disposables to a refillable pod kit, the simplest trick is to stay loyal to the brand you already like. ELFLIQ is made by the same company as Elf Bar, MARYLIQ comes from Lost Mary and IVGLIQ is made by IVG. The flavours are designed to match the disposables closely, so you keep the taste you know while cutting your waste and your costs. Fill your pod, let it soak for ten minutes and take slow, gentle puffs for the first few days while you get used to it. Our pod kit buying guide covers choosing the device itself.
Does strength change how long your liquid lasts?
It often does, and this surprises people. When the strength is right, you tend to take fewer puffs because you feel satisfied sooner. When the strength is too low, people chain vape and get through pods and bottles much faster. With e-liquid now taxed at 50 cent per millilitre in Ireland, choosing the right strength can genuinely save you money. We share more money saving tips in our guide to making your vape last longer.
What about VG and PG?
Every e-liquid is made mostly from two base ingredients:
- PG (propylene glycol) carries flavour well and adds to the throat hit. It is thin and soaks into small coils easily.
- VG (vegetable glycerin) is thicker, slightly sweet and produces more vapour.
Nic salts are usually a 50/50 blend, which is perfect for small pod coils. High VG liquids, such as 70/30, are thicker and can struggle to soak into a pod coil, which leads to dry hits and a burnt taste. As a rule, if you use a pod kit, stick to 50/50.
Can I step down my nicotine over time?
Yes, and many people do. A common route is moving from 20mg to 10mg after a few months, and then lower if they want to. Go at your own pace and only step down when you feel ready. Dropping too quickly often leads to vaping more, not less.
If your goal is to stop using nicotine completely, the HSE offers free support through its QUIT service, and it is worth speaking to your GP or pharmacist about the options available to you.
Frequently asked questions
Is nic salt stronger than freebase?
Not by definition. 20mg is 20mg either way. Nic salt simply feels smoother, which is why it is sold at higher strengths.
Can I use nic salt in a big sub ohm tank?
We do not recommend it. Sub ohm tanks produce a lot of vapour, and high strength nic salt in large amounts would be far too much nicotine at once.
What strength is a Lost Mary or Elf Bar disposable?
The versions sold legally in Ireland are almost always 20mg nic salt. That makes 20mg MARYLIQ or ELFLIQ the natural match when you switch to a pod kit.
Is 0mg an option?
Yes. Some products, like the SKE Crystal 0mg kit, are completely nicotine free for people who enjoy the flavour and habit without nicotine.
